William & Mary in Virginia seeks an HPC Systems Engineer in our Job of the Week.
HPC Systems Engineer provides day-to-day operations, maintenance and hardware engineering support for computer systems managed by the Research Computing (RC) within the Office of Information Technology. These systems include Linux-based HPC clusters; departmental servers and workstations under the control of RC; These systems and the applications that run on them are characterized by leading-edge computing, networking, and software technologies, complex and demanding computational requirements, and large data-sets.
Primary responsibilities include (but not limited to):
- Hardware installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and replacement. Operating system installation and basic configuration. Monitoring and configuring backups and ensuring data integrity.
- Monitoring system resource utilization (CPU, memory, disk, network) and workload to ensure effective use of the system. Responsible for physical and network security as well as a safe operating environment.
- Manage user accounts. Assist users with system related questions and problems.
- Provide operations and routine system administration support for all computers under control of RC including, Linux, Mac and Windows environments.
- Aid in property management for the RC Group including a detailed equipment inventory.
- Document procedures involved in the above tasks.
