In this special guest feature, Robert Roe from Scientific Computing World writes that increasingly power-hungry and high-density processors are driving the growth of liquid and immersion cooling technology. “We know that CPUs and GPUs are going to get denser and we have developed technologies that are available today which support a 500-watt chip the size of a V100 and we are working on the development of boiling enhancements that would allow us to go beyond that.”
Avaso to Deliver Worldwide Support for GRC Immersive Cooling
Immersive cooling vendor GRC has announced a new business collaboration with Avaso, an IT solutions provider with global service delivery and warranty capabilities. Through this collaboration, Avaso will provide installation and maintenance services, as well as offer extended warranty coverage for GRC’s ICEraQ, ICEtank, HASHtank, and HASHraQ liquid immersion-cooling systems to customers in 150+ countries. In addition to servicing GRC’s systems, the service extends to the OEM immersed servers as well, enabling a single point of contact for maintenance and warranty related events.
Schneider Electric Launches Industry’s First Integrated Rack with Immersed, Liquid-Cooled IT for Data Centers
Today Schneider Electric and Iceotope announced the industry’s first commercially-available integrated rack with chassis-based, immersive liquid cooling. Optimized for compute-intensive applications, the solution combines a high-powered GPU server with Iceotope’s liquid cooling technology to increase energy efficiency. Avnet integrates the liquid-cooled server with Schneider Electric’s NetShelter liquid-cooled enclosure system for simple deployment into data centers or edge computing environments.
Video: TMGcore Showcases Immersive Cooling for HPC at SC19
In this video from SC19, Taylor Monnig from TMGcore describes OTTO, a completely automated, self-contained, two-phase liquid immersion-cooled data center platform that features a closed loop system, uses zero water and is a tenth of the size of a traditional data center. By using OTTO, clients can cut operational costs by 80 percent while receiving ten times more processing power per square foot.
Immersive Cooling from Submer Technologies coming to EU Joint Research Center in Italy
In a collaborative effort with Airbus, Submer Technologies and 2CRSi are providing supercomputer-speed processing in high-density clusters to support real-time workloads for advanced Artificial Intelligence (AR) cybersecurity research applications at the JRC campus. “This is one of our most important installations yet. It’s a mission-critical, high-density compute environment where physical space and energy compliance are important considerations,” said Daniel Pope, CEO of Submer. “We designed the SmartPod to address all of these issues – making this project a perfect use-case for our liquid immersion cooling platform.”
HPC Goes Green at Goonhilly Earth Station with Submer Immersive Cooling
“As an innovator in hyper-efficient immersion cooling technology, Submer Technologies is partnering with Goonhilly and 2CRSI to provide HPC solutions with higher performance at less than half the energy consumption of traditional datacenters. A SmartPod immersion cooling system installed on-site will be running CPU and GPU-intensive simulations using HPC servers provided by 2CRSI using the latest Nvidia and AMD chipsets to showcase the future of datacenters during a series of special events over the next several months.”
DUG Opens the Doors for 250 PF Bubba Supercomputer in Houston
Today DownUnder GeoSolutions (DUG) opened its giant new data center in Skybox Houston. Touted to be one of the most powerful supercomputers on earth, the facility is home to the company’s geophysical cloud service, DUG McCloud. “DUG is offering a unique cloud product including compute, storage, geophysical software, and services, initially with a massive 250 PF of geophysically-configured compute ready to go,” said DUG’s Managing Director, Dr Matthew Lamont.
DUG Installs Immersive Cooling for Bubba Supercomputer in Houston
Today DownUnder GeoSolutions (DUG) announced that tanks are arriving at Skybox Houston for “Bubba,” its huge geophysically-configured supercomputer. “DUG will cool the massive Houston supercomputer using their innovative immersion cooling system that has computer nodes fully submerged in specially-designed tanks filled with polyalphaolefin dielectric fluid. This month, the first of these 722 tanks have been arriving in shipping containers at the facility in Houston.”
GRC Partners to Provide Worldwide Support and Server Warranties for Immersion Cooling
We’ve been hearing more and more about immersive cooling for HPC, but what happens to system warranties in these kinds of installations? Today GRC took a step to ease these concerns through collaboration with TechData to provide support and warranties for worldwide customers submerging servers and other equipment in GRC’s immersion cooling systems. “As we grow our global footprint, it is wonderful to add TechData to our network of partners, while providing customers with added peace of mind,” said Peter Poulin, CEO of GRC.
Asperitas Startup Brings Immersive Cooling to Datacenters
Today Dutch startup Asperitas rolled out Immersed Computing cooling technology for datacenters. “The company’s first market ready solution, the AIC24, ‘the first water-cooled oil-immersion system which relies on natural convection for circulation of the dielectric liquid.’ This results in a fully self-contained and Plug and Play modular system. The AIC24 needs far less infrastructure than any other liquid installation, saving energy and costs on all levels of datacentre operations. The AIC24 is the most sustainable solution available for IT environments today. Ensuring the highest possible efficiency in availability, energy reduction and reuse, while increasing capacity. Greatly improving density, while saving energy at the same time.”
