DK Panda from Ohio State University gave this talk at the Stanford HPC Conference. “This talk will focus on challenges in designing HPC, Deep Learning, and HPC Cloud middleware for Exascale systems with millions of processors and accelerators. For the HPC domain, we will discuss about the challenges in designing runtime environments for MPI+X (PGAS – OpenSHMEM/UPC/CAF/UPC++, OpenMP, and CUDA) programming models taking into account support for multi-core systems (Xeon, OpenPower, and ARM), high-performance networks, GPGPUs (including GPUDirect RDMA), and energy-awareness.”
How to Design Scalable HPC, Deep Learning and Cloud Middleware for Exascale Systems

The MVAPICH User Group Meeting (MUG 2018) has published its Speaker Agenda. The event will take place from August 6-8 in Columbus, Ohio. “MUG aims to bring together MVAPICH2 users, researchers, developers, and system administrators to share their experience and knowledge and learn from each other. The event includes Keynote Talks, Invited Tutorials, Invited Talks, Contributed Presentations, Open MIC session, hands-on sessions MVAPICH developers, etc.”
Exploiting HPC Technologies for Accelerating Big Data Processing and Associated Deep Learning
DK Panda from Ohio State University gave this talk at the Swiss HPC Conference. “This talk will provide an overview of challenges in accelerating Hadoop, Spark, and Memcached on modern HPC clusters. An overview of RDMA-based designs for Hadoop (HDFS, MapReduce, RPC and HBase), Spark, Memcached, Swift, and Kafka using native RDMA support for InfiniBand and RoCE will be presented. Enhanced designs for these components to exploit NVM-based in-memory technology and parallel file systems (such as Lustre) will also be presented.”
DK Panda Launches X-ScaleSolutions Startup for HPC Applications
In this video, DK Panda from X-ScaleSolutions describes how the company optimizes and supports open source software for HPC. “At X-ScaleSolutions, we align cutting edge technology into a convergent trajectory so that business analytics with Big Data/Deep Learning can be solved with high-performance and scalability while exploiting the latest HPC and Cloud technologies. The vision of X-ScaleSolutions is to bring innovative and efficient end-to-end solutions, services, support, and training to our customers.”
Overview of the MVAPICH Project and Future Roadmap
“This talk will provide an overview of the MVAPICH project (past, present and future). Future roadmap and features for upcoming releases of the MVAPICH2 software family (including MVAPICH2-X, MVAPICH2-GDR, MVAPICH2-Virt, MVAPICH2-EA and MVAPICH2-MIC) will be presented. Current status and future plans for OSU INAM, OEMT and OMB will also be presented.”
OSC Hosts fifth MVAPICH Users Group
A broad array of system administrators, developers, researchers and students who share an interest in the MVAPICH open-source library for high performance computing will gather this week for the fifth meeting of the MVAPICH Users Group (MUG). “Dr. Panda’s library is a cornerstone for HPC machines around the world, including OSC’s systems and many of the Top 500,” said Dave Hudak, Ph.D., interim executive director of OSC. “We’ve gained a lot of insight and expertise from partnering with DK and his research group throughout the years.”
ExaComm 2017 Workshop at ISC High Performance posts Full Agenda
The ExaComm 2017 Workshop at ISC High Performance has posted its Full Agenda. As the Third International Workshop on Communication Architectures for HPC, Big Data, Deep Learning and Clouds at Extreme Scale, the one day workshop takes place at the Frankfurt Marriott Hotel on Thursday, June 22. “The objectives of this workshop will be to share the experiences of the members of this community and to learn the opportunities and challenges in the design trends for exascale communication architectures.”
Rock Stars of HPC: DK Panda
As our newest Rock Star of HPC, DK Panda sat down with us to discuss his passion for teaching High Performance Computing. “During the last several years, HPC systems have been going through rapid changes to incorporate accelerators. The main software challenges for such systems have been to provide efficient support for programming models with high performance and high productivity. For NVIDIA-GPU based systems, seven years back, my team introduced a novel `CUDA-aware MPI’ concept. This paradigm allows complete freedom to application developers for not using CUDA calls to perform data movement.”
ISC 2017 Announces Finalists for Hans Meuer Award
Today ISC 2017 announced the finalists for the Hans Meuer Award. Introduced in memory of the late Dr. Hans Meuer of TOP500 fame, the award recognizes the most outstanding research paper submitted to the conference’s Research Papers Committee.
DK Panda Team Launches High-Performance Deep Learning Project
Deep learning is one of the hottest topics at SC16. Now, DK Panda and his team at Ohio State University have announced an exciting new High-Performance Deep Learning project that aims to bring HPC technologies to the DL field. “Availability of large data sets like ImageNet and massively parallel computation support in modern HPC devices like NVIDIA GPUs have fueled a renewed interest in Deep Learning (DL) algorithms. This has triggered the development of DL frameworks like Caffe, Torch, TensorFlow, and CNTK. However, most DL frameworks have been limited to a single node. The objective of the HiDL project is to exploit modern HPC technologies and solutions to scale out and accelerate DL frameworks.”
