ISC 2020 Student Cluster Competition: The Winner Is….
Students from China’s University of Science and Technology (USTC) won first place in this year’s annual Student Cluster Competition at the ISC 2020 Digital conference. This year’s competition focused on the global fight against Covid-19 by including applications that address education and applied learning towards accelerating bioscience research and discovery. The teams, totaling 80 students, were tasked to test several applications used by scientists and researchers for finding a cure for the pandemic.

ISC 2020 Digital will showcase the latest advancements in HPC, encompassing all the key developments happening in system design, applications, programming models, machine learning, and emerging technologies through a consolidated online event. This event is free from registration fee, and as the largest online HPC event this year, the organizers anticipate registration numbers to match the live Frankfurt conference [&] exhibition, which is approximately 3,700 attendees.
Shaheen II Supercomputer to power COVID-19 research
KAUST has opened a call for proposals for COVID-19 research to be run on the Shaheen II supercomputer and related resources. Shaheen II joins many supercomputers around the world that have recently reallocated a portion of their resources to campaigns to model the pandemic. “In related news, “COVID-19 and High Performance Computing” is the subject of a special session of the now virtualized ISC 2020 conference, according to Professor David Keyes, Director of KAUST’s Extreme Computing Research Center, who is the Program Chair of the event.”
Update on the HPC AI Advisory Council
Setting the stage for the Stanford HPC Conference this week, Gilad Shainer describes how the HPC AI Advisory Council fosters innovation in the high performance computing community. “The HPC-AI Advisory Council’s mission is to bridge the gap between high-performance computing and Artificial Intelligence use and its potential, bring the beneficial capabilities of HPC and AI to new users for better research, education, innovation and product manufacturing, bring users the expertise needed to operate HPC and AI systems, provide application designers with the tools needed to enable parallel computing, and to strengthen the qualification and integration of HPC and AI system products.”
PASC20 Conference postponed to 2021
The PASC20 conference in Geneva has been postponed to 2021. The new dates for the conference – PASC21 – are July 5-7, 2021, at the same location – the University of Geneva in Switzerland. “We hope that you will be able to join us next year for an engaging in-person event. We are pleased to announce that our plenary speakers have confirmed their availability for PASC21. Contributors whose submissions have been accepted for presentation at PASC20 will be given the opportunity to provide updated abstracts. Presenters and minisymposia organizers will be contacted separately to confirm their participation and the content of their presentations. Additionally, we foresee a call for new contributions in late 2020.”
ISC 2020 Registration is Open with a COVID-19 Advisory
Today the ISC 2020 conference announced that registration will open on March 19 along with a Covid-19 Advisory. The conference takes place June 21-25 in Frankfurt. “In light of the ever-changing situation, we are offering our attendees as much flexibility and planning comfort as possible with our cancellation policy. Up until May 11 (39 days before the conference), you can request a full refund on your conference registration fee.”
ISC 2020 Keynotes Focus on Shaping Tomorrow
Today ISC 2020 announced that Mattias Troyer and Thomas Sterling will be keynote speakers at the event. During his keynote, Troyer will describe the hardware and software architectures of quantum computers systems and discuss how they differ from classical HPC systems. Sterling’s closing address this year promises to be more wide-ranging than his usual retrospective, as he traces the intersection of long-term trends involving the diminishing prospects of Moore’s Law, the lengthening lifetimes systems, the consolidation of the HPC market, and the ascent of machine learning.”
Call for Participation: ISC Workshop on In Situ Visualization 2020
The ISC Workshop On In Situ Visualization 2020 has issued its Call for Participation. The event takes place June 25 in Frankfurt, Germany. “We encourage contributed talks on methods and workflows that have been used for large-scale parallel visualization, with a particular focus on the in situ case. Presentations on codes that closely couple numerical methods and visualization are particularly welcome.”
ISC 2020 Launches HPC Career Day
Fostering STEM education is a key to the future of high performance computing. Along these lines, ISC 2020 HPC Career Day will give 200 job seekers interested in HPC the opportunity to participate in the ISC 2020 conference on Wednesday, June 24. “Organizations scouting for STEM talent are welcome to utilize this new program to make connections with students, early and mid-career professionals looking for exciting prospects within the areas of HPC, machine learning, and data analytics.”
