The Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) is using its supercomputing resources to support the federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “For the High-Performance Computing COVID-19 Consortium, the HPCMP offers access and technical expert support for the program’s open research system, a Cray supercomputer with 15,000 cores. The platform is set up outside of the sensitive “official use only” environment and can easily support academics on short notice.”
Video: A Preview of SC20 in Atlanta
In this video, SC20 General Chair Christine E. Cuicchi from the DoD Modernization Program previews the Supercomputing conference coming to Atlanta in November. “Christine Cuicchi is director of the Navy Department of Defense Supercomputing Resource Center (Navy DSRC), operated by the Commander, Naval Oceanography and Meteorology Command (CNMOC). The center provides HPC, storage, networks, and computational expertise which are available to over 2,500 RDT&E, S&T, and acquisition professionals in the DoD.”
SC19 Session Preview: Whither Advanced Scientific Computing After Exascale Is Achieved?
“The goal of this BoF is to discuss the landscape for advanced scientific computing after the United States achieves the exascale milestone. What are possible future breakthroughs? What are promising computing and mathematics research directions? How do we organize people and resources to move forward? How do we sustain and broaden the impact of exascale technology? These questions will be introduced by members of a task force that is studying beyond the Exascale Computing Project.”
AFRL Unveils Sharable Classified Supercomputing Capability
The Air Force Research Laboratory has unveiled the first-ever shared classified Department of Defense high performance computing capability at the AFRL DOD Supercomputing Resource Center. “The ability to share supercomputers at higher classification levels will allow programs to get their supercomputing work done quickly while maintaining necessary security. Programs will not need to spend their budget and waste time constructing their own secure computer facilities, and buying and accrediting smaller computers for short-term work. This new capability will save billions for the DOD while providing additional access to state-of-the-art computing.”
HPE wins $57 Million Supercomputing Contract for DoD Modernization Program
Today HPE announced it has been selected to provide new supercomputers for the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) to accelerate the development and acquisition of advanced national security capabilities. “The DoD’s continuous investment in supercomputing innovation is a clear testament to this development and an important contribution to U.S. national security. HPE has been a strategic partner with the HPCMP for two decades, and we are proud that the DoD now significantly extends this partnership, acknowledging HPE’s sustained leadership in high performance computing.”
Radio Free HPC looks at New Leadership at HPE
In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team looks at HPE’s new CEO, Antonio Neri, a longtime HPE executive who previously served as President of the company. As the number 1 server vendor in the HPC space, this change will be one to watch as we transition to the exascale era in the next five years or so. “This transistion comes at an interesting time for HPE, as one of their main competitors, Dell Technologies, is reportedly looking at an IPO or reverse acquisition by VMware.”
DoD Modernization Program to Acquire Cray XC40
Today Cray announced the Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) has awarded the Company with a $26 million supercomputer contract for a Cray XC40 supercomputer and three Cray Sonexion storage systems.
HPC Modernization Program Boosts Supercomputing at DoD
Today the Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Program announced details of its fiscal year 2016 investment in supercomputing capability supporting the DOD science, engineering, test and acquisition engineering communities. The total life-cycle investment is valued at $63.7 million, including acquisition of three supercomputing systems with corresponding hardware and software maintenance services. With the addition of 10 petaFLOPS of computing capability, this procurement will increase the DOD HPCMP’s aggregate supercomputing capability to 31.1 petaFLOPS.
SGI Awarded $27M Systems Contract with ARL
Today, SGI announced that the United States Department of Defense (DoD) has selected SGI ICE XA for two of its Army Research Laboratory Defense Supercomputing Resource Center systems. The upgrades are part of a technology insertion, known as TI-16, for their High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP). “We’re excited to partner with SGI for our TI-16 DoD program, and have full confidence in the system’s ability to provide excellent performance,” said Dr. Raju Namburu, director of ARL DSRC. “Choosing the right HPC partners is crucial, as we rely on supercomputing and large-scale analytics and predictive sciences to provide the competitive edge we need to maintain our position as the nation’s premier laboratory for land forces.”
