“Lawyers who use AI will replace lawyers who don’t.” That was the coda of a presentation given at the recent HPC User Forum in Tucson by Arizona State University law professor Gary Marchant, a graduate of Harvard Law School and a professor at ASU since 1999. Marchant’s presentation at the Forum, hosted by Hyperion Research, was one of the conference’s most talked-about sessions. In this interview, Marchant shares his observations on how generative AI and large language models….
Large Language Models: The Largeness, the Power and the ‘Emergent’ Mystery
Large language models fit the classic model of a red-hot technology in an early stage of commercial viability: there’s more talk about it than knowledge, and FOMO – the fear that your competitors are implementing it at your peril – is helping to drive explosive demand. There’s also an allure and mystery around LLMs: some of the awe-inspiring “zero shot” things they do surprise even the data scientists who trained the models (more on this below). Against this backdrop….
HPC News Bytes 20230911: NVIDIA LLM Inferencing; Honeywell and Quantinuum; TSMC in Silicon Photonics; Microsoft Copilot AI Indemnification
As we reflect on the events of 9/11/2001 (it’s still living hell no matter how long ago it happened), let’s quickly (4:52) review last week’s HPC news highlights, including: NVIDIA TensorRT-LLM for faster AI inferencing; Honeywell integrates quantum-hardened encryption keys from Quantinuum; TSMC enters the silicon photonics arena; Microsoft to defend Copilot AI customers; Hyperion Research hosts HPC User Forum
At the HPC User Forum: 2 Full Days in Tucson of HPC and AI
This week saw HPC industry analyst firm Hyperion Research host the HPC User Forum, a supercomputing conference with an end-user emphasis held four times a year (two in the U.S. and two internationally) offering two intensive days of presentations and panels involving commercial and government users, along with hardware and software vendors.

Dell: How HPC Serves a Vital Role in National Health & Wellness, Public Safety, Border and Commerce Security
When HPC and national security appear in the same sentence, thoughts typically turn towards military, defense and homeland security. While that’s a natural association, national security means more than just physical and border safety. Security also encompasses public health and safety, and secure systems for commerce and finance, which are critical to the well-being – […]
@HPCpodcast: Hyperion’s Bob Sorensen on the State and Future of Quantum Computing
This week’s episode of the @HPCpodcast features a return guest, Bob Sorensen, vice president of research at HPC industry analyst firm Hyperion Research, to talk with us about the state of the quantum computing sector. Sorensen offered his quantum insights at last month’s ISC 2023 conference in Hamburg, and here he talks about the highlights from his latest update, including market sizing (it’s bigger than you might think), growth projections (more than you might think) and how companies are investigating and experimenting with quantum and quantum-related project work. We also touch on progress in making quantum a practical reality, technical barriers, customer sentiment, recent advances in noise management and quantum computing geopolitics.
At ISC 2023: Hyperion Reports HPC Industry Grew 4% in 2022; AI to Drive Stronger Growth Next and Following Years
The HPC industry managed to achieve modest overall growth in 2022, but growth of any kind was in doubt right up to the end of the year, according to HPC-AI industry analyst firm Hyperion Research, which hosted its bi-annual HPC market update at a breakfast event this week during the ISC 2023 conference in Hamburg. […]
ISC 2023: HPC Experts’ Thoughts on Making the Most of the Conference
ISC 2023, one of the biggest supercomputing confabs of the year, will be held May 21-25 in Hamburg, and for those days the conference will be the place to be in HPC. If last year’s ISC marked a big step in coming out from under the pandemic shadow, let’s hope this year’s event leaves it completely behind us. ISC 2023 will have 147 exhibitors, 15 percent more than last year, along with hundreds of items on the conference’s extensive agenda: keynotes, sessions, off-site events – all that. Getting the most of the conference calls for good time management and good judgment. As an assist to attendees we spoke with three industry thought leaders – Katie Antypas of NERSC, Earl Joseph of Hyperion Research and Addison Snell of Intersect360 Research – about conference events, keynotes and potential news developments they think will be worthy of your attention.
