Epidemiologists have turned to the power of supercomputers to model and predict how the disease spreads at local and regional levels in hopes of forecasting potential new hot spots and guiding policy makers’ decisions in containing the disease’s spread. GCS is supporting several projects focused on these goals. “”Our workflows are perfectly scalable in the sense that the number of calculations we can perform is directly proportional to the number of cores available.”
GCS Student Team preps for SC19 Student Cluster Competition
The Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) will once again sponsor some of Germany’s brightest collegiate minds at the SC19 Student Cluster Competition. Team “deFAUlt” is one of four European teams entering the student competition. In total, 16 teams qualified to participate in this year’s student challenge, with six other teams representing hosting country USA, five teams coming from China and one Singaporean team rounding out the group of competitors.
GCS Centres HLRS, JSC, and LRZ to Exhibit SC19
Meet the three GCS centres, the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS), Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), and Leibniz Supercomputing Centre Garching (LRZ) at SC19 in Denver, Colorado (USA). The international conference for high-performance computing, networking, storage, and analysis is the annually recurring premier event for the global high-performance computing (HPC) community.
GCS Sponsors University Teams for ISC19 Student Cluster Competition
The Gauss Centre for Supercomputing is sponsoring the two German student teams for the Student Cluster Competition at ISC 2019 in Frankfurt. The teams, representing the University of Hamburg and Heidelberg University, are among the 14 student teams from Asia, North America, Africa, and Europe that will go head to head on the exhibition show floor.
GCS in Germany Allocates More Than 1 Billion Core Hours to Research Projects
GCS in Germany has approved the allocation of 1.171 billion core hours of computing time to 13 outstanding national research projects. The researchers awarded computing time allocations on the German Tier 0/1 supercomputing systems Hazel Hen at HLRS, JUWELS at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, and SuperMUC-NG at LRZ for a period of 12 months.
GCS in Germany Appoints Prof. Dr. Dieter Kranzlmüller as Chairman of the Board
Today the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing in Germany announced the appointment of Prof. Dr. Dieter Kranzlmüller as its new Chair of the Board of Directors. “As we advance towards the exascale threshold of computing and an era of unprecedented discovery and insights driven by the integration of modeling and simulation, data analytics and artificial intelligence, GCS stands ready to provide the basis and the catalyst of innovation–the hardware, software ecosystem, experience and expertise–needed to boost scientific and industrial breakthroughs.”
GCS in Germany Grants 816 Million Core Hours to Science
Today the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing’s (GCS) in Germany awarded 816.3 million core hours as part of the organization’s 20th Call for Large-Scale Projects. The computing time grants support national research activities from the fields of Computational and Scientific Engineering (351.3 million core hours), Astrophysics (247.5 million core hours), and High Energy Physics (217.5 million core hours).
GCS Sponsors Team deFAUlt at SC18 Student Cluster Competition
The Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) is sponsoring the “deFAUlt” team from FAU at the Student Cluster Competition at SC18 in Dallas. “For the past two years, FAU teams were able to come out of these competitions winning the coveted high-performance LINPACK Benchmark challenge.”
300K-Core SuperMUC-NG System Launches at LRZ in Germany
LRZ in Germany dedicated their new SuperMUC-NG (“next generation”) supercomputer last week in Munich. Built by Lenovo, the massive system uses innovative hot-water cooling to achieve unprecedented computational power for large-scale scientific and engineering simulations.
