March 11, 2024 — The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a $5.2 million federal investment for 13 projects that will tap into the DOE national laboratories’ high performance computing (HPC) resources to help industry partners improve material performance, advance manufacturing processes, and reduce industrial emissions. These collaborative projects will address manufacturing and materials challenges to support the goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

As a part of DOE’s High Performance Computing for Energy Innovation (HPC4EI) initiative, the selected projects will apply advanced modeling, simulation, and data analysis to advance clean energy manufacturing and decarbonization goals. This round of selections focuses on topic areas associated with HPC4EI’s HPC4Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) and HPC4Materials (HPC4Mtls) programs, which are supported by DOE’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO), Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO), and Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM).
DOE also issued a Notice of Intent (NOI) today to issue its Spring 2024 Solicitation for project proposals for the HPC4EI program. This spring solicitation will include the HPC4Mtls program, sponsored by FECM’s Hydrogen with Carbon Management and Point Source Carbon Capture programs.

HPC4Mfg is funded by the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy’s AMMTO and IEDO. HPC4Mtls is funded by FECM.
