ICHEC to develop quantum circuit simulation tools for Europe’s largest supercomputers
Today the Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC) announced that it is leading a novel quantum simulation project in collaboration with partners at the Leibniz Supercomputing centre (LRZ) to develop quantum simulation tools for Europe’s largest supercomputers. “While actual quantum computing is still some way off, the simulation tools we are creating will advance the necessary concepts and skill-sets for quantum programming,” said Dr Niall Moran, Principal Investigator and project leader of the PRACE WP8 QuantEx project at ICHEC. “This work is being conducted with world-class research teams across a number of Irish third-level institutions and will contribute to preparing Ireland for Quantum programming.”
ICHEC: Satellite Data Indicates Illegal Burning in Rural Areas of Ireland During COVID-19 Shutdown
Satellite Data analyzed by scientists from ICHEC (Irish Centre for High-End Computing) using European Space Agency Sentinel 5-P satellite data shows evidence of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) emissions in a number of rural areas during February and March 2020. “ICHEC released imagery today, April 3 in which the scientists observed general reductions in emissions (blue areas of the maps) from the lower levels of activity in the economy due to COVID-19 but also observed a few spikes (red areas) on some dates, most likely associated with fires in rural areas.”
European HPC ecosystem supports the fight against COVID-19
The European PRACE initiative has released a list of partner activities and initiatives to help combat COVID-19. While medical professionals are working around the clock to help those affected, PRACE partners, HPC centres, and research infrastructures are doing their bit by opening up their facilities for urgent/priority access to the HPC systems and other resources to support the research to combat the coronavirus.
ICHEC to Bring European Quantum Technologies Conference to Dublin
Over 500 global experts in quantum technologies will descend on Dublin in November this year for the European Quantum Technologies Conference (EQTC). Taking place Nov. 23-27 in Dublin, the event is the flagship event of the European Quantum Initiative a €1 billion initiative launched by the EU in 2018 to bring together research institutions, industry and public funders, to expand European scientific leadership and excellence in Quantum. “EQTC is an important stepping stone in positioning Ireland as an international global hub for quantum technologies and applications,” said Prof. Jean-Christophe (JC) Desplat, Director of ICHEC and Chair of the EQTC 2020 organizing committee.
Accelerating Research and Enterprise Solutions by Bridging HPC and AI
Venkatesh Kannan from ICHEC gave this talk at the UK HPC Conference. “The presentation will highlight the need to address the symbiotic relationship between HPC and AI at different levels – technology development, education & training, and policy making – in order to enable the adoption and accelerating the development of AI solutions by the research and enterprise communities. A number of efforts and projects that are undertaken at the Irish Centre for High-End Computing towards enabling and achieving this in the Irish and European context will be presented.”
Penguin Computing to Deploy Supercomputer at ICHEC in Ireland
Today Penguin Computing (a subsidiary of SMART Global Holdings) announced that it will deliver the new national supercomputer to the Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC) at the National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway. “With 11 supercomputers in the Top500 list and a bare-metal HPC Cloud service since 2009, we knew we could rely on Penguin Computing’s HPC expertise to address our needs in an innovative way.”
SGI Opens European Research Centre at ICHEC in Ireland
Today SGI announced a significant investment in extreme scale software research at the Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC), a top European center. The investment highlights the commitment of SGI to the European software research community. These resources, including SGI application software and supercomputing hardware expertise, will assist scientists as they explore issues related to climate change, weather forecasting, and environmental research among many other topics.
PRACEdays15 Puts the Spotlight on Irish HPC
In this report from PRACEdays15 conference in Dublin last week, Robert Roe from Scientific Computing World looks at the role of HPC in the host country, Ireland.
SGI Powers Fionn Supercomputer at ICHEC in Ireland
In this video, Niall Wilson describes how ICHEC delivers top-quality technology services and support to universities and enterprises. “Based on the solution’s superior price performance, ICHEC deployed Fionn, a supercomputer built on SGI ICE X hardware running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. On implementing Fionn, ICHEC was funded by Intel to work on its new many-core technology as an official Intel Parallel Computing Center.”
