Getting to Exascale Day 2022 with an Exascale System Wasn’t Easy https://insidehpc.com/2022/10/it-wasnt-easy-getting-to-exascale-day-with-an-exascale-system/ Wed, 19 Oct 2022 03:55:58 +0000 https://insidehpc.com/?p=90355

Finally, after 15-plus years of intellectual strain (planning), bureaucratic wrangling (budgeting), technical toil (system building) and, probably, some tears, the HPC community has arrived at an Exascale Day, October 18 (1018), on which we actually have a certified exaFLOPS supercomputer: Frontier, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Exascale is no longer in the future, it’s here, […]

ISC 2022 in Hamburg was notable for a number of reasons – it was not only the first in-person ISC since 2019, it also provided a plethora of major news. This included big changes at the top of the TOP500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, and the Frontier HPC system at Oak Ridge National Lab surpassing of the exascale milestone. While AMD, whose chips power Frontier, and HPE, which built Frontier, were the conference’s spotlight vendors, Intel also made some impressive product announcements, as analyzed in this discussion by Shahin Khan.
