The MVAPICH User Group Meeting (MUG) has posted its meeting agenda. The event takes place August 14-16, 2017 in Columbus, Ohio. “As the annual gathering of MVAPICH2 users, researchers, developers, and system administrators, the MUG event includes Keynote Talks, Invited Tutorials, Invited Talks, Contributed Presentations, Open MIC session, and hands-on sessions.”
Supercomputing the Impact of Loan Forgiveness Programs
Graduate Assistant Hongyu Chen used data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth to model individuals’ education, career, borrowing, and spending decisions based on whether or not they were part of a loan forgiveness program. Chen wrote a program that ran simulations of over 151 parameters on a population of approximately 2,500 individuals between the ages of 18 to 65 during different periods of their lives. “The estimation takes around 10 years if I’m running just one single computer,” Chen said. “That’s why I have to use the cluster of computers, like the supercomputer, that use multiple cores at the same time, so that saves me a lot of time.”

Job of the Week: Senior Scientific App Engineer at Ohio State
The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) seeks a Senior Scientific Applications Engineer to support the overall mission of the group and in particular to contribute to the overall mission of the Center with a focus on application support for OSC’s industrial engagement and research programs.
Rock Stars of HPC: DK Panda
As our newest Rock Star of HPC, DK Panda sat down with us to discuss his passion for teaching High Performance Computing. “During the last several years, HPC systems have been going through rapid changes to incorporate accelerators. The main software challenges for such systems have been to provide efficient support for programming models with high performance and high productivity. For NVIDIA-GPU based systems, seven years back, my team introduced a novel `CUDA-aware MPI’ concept. This paradigm allows complete freedom to application developers for not using CUDA calls to perform data movement.”
Panel Discussion: The Exascale Era
In this video from Switzerland HPC Conference, Rich Brueckner from insideHPC moderates a panel discussion on Exascale Computing. “The Exascale Computing Project in the USA is tasked with developing a set of advanced supercomputers with 50x better performance than today’s fastest machines on real applications. This panel discussion will look at the challenges, gaps, and probable pathways forward in this monumental endeavor.”
Panelists:
Gilad Shainer, HPC Advisory Council
Jeffrey Stuecheli, IBM
DK Panda, Ohio State University
Torsten Hoefler, ETH Zurich
Rich Graham, Mellanox
Panel Discussion: The Exascale Endeavor
Gilad Shainer moderated this panel discussion on Exascale Computing at the Stanford HPC Conference. “The creation of a capable exascale ecosystem will have profound effects on the lives of Americans, improving our nation’s national security, economic competitiveness, and scientific capabilities. The exponential increase of computation power enabled with exascale will fuel a vast range of breakthroughs and accelerate discoveries in national security, medicine, earth sciences and many other fields.”
