In this special guest feature, Robert Roe from Scientific Computing World looks at use cases for cloud technology in HPC. “In previous years there have been some concerns around security or the cost of moving data to and from the cloud, but these reservations are slowly being eroded as more users see value in developing a cloud infrastructure as part of their HPC resource.”
Univa Powers Intel Select Solutions for HPC & AI Converged Clusters
Today Univa announced that the company is participating in the Intel Select Solution for HPC and AI Converged Clusters. “By giving our customers a path to take this next step, Intel has likewise put a lot of work into developing a set of solutions that support pooling of individual workload-optimized clusters to create a uniform computing environment that can run cloud and HPC, AI and HPDA workloads 24/7.”
Univa Powers Million-core Cluster on AWS for Western Digital
Today Univa announced that Western Digital is using the company’s Navops Launch and Univa Grid Engine cloud software for large-scale deployments on AWS. “This successful collaboration with Univa and AWS shows the extreme scale, power and agility of cloud-based HPC to help us run complex simulations for future storage architecture analysis and materials science explorations. Using AWS to easily shrink simulation time from 20 days to 8 hours allows Western Digital R&D teams to explore new designs and innovations at a pace un-imaginable just a short time ago.”
Univa Announces Collaboration with Sylabs for HPC Containers
Today Univa announced a partnership with Sylabs to offer enhanced support and integration for Sylabs’ Singularity container platform in Univa Grid Engine and other Univa products. “Customers are rapidly embracing containers for high-performance workloads and Singularity offers clear advantages,” said Gary Tyreman, CEO of Univa. “We’re delighted to be collaborating with Sylabs to make container technology easier to use and deploy. By improving interoperability between Univa products and Singularity, we can make it easier for customers to reap the benefits associated with container technology.”
Univa Brings Navops to HPC at ISC 2018
In this video, Gary Tyreman from Univa describes how the company is helping HPC users move their workloads to the Cloud with their Navops products. “Univa is the leading innovator in workload management and orchestration solutions. With Navops suite of products, Univa is bringing its expertise to containers. Univa Navops is a suite of products that enable enterprises to easily migrate to the cloud or hybrid cloud, increase efficiencies and run containers at scale.”
What would you do with a Million cores?
Ian Colle from AWS gave this talk at the Univa Breakfast Briefing at ISC 2018. “To demonstrate the unique ability to run very large enterprise HPC clusters and workloads, Univa leveraged AWS to deploy 1,015,022 cores in a single Univa Grid Engine cluster to showcase the advantages of running large-scale electronic design automation (EDA) workloads in the cloud. The cluster was built in approximately 2.5 hours using Navops Launch automation and comprised more than 55,000 AWS instances in 3 availability zones, 16 different instance types and leveraged AWS Spot Fleet technology to maximize the rate at which Amazon EC2 hosts were launched while enabling capacity and costs to be managed according to policy.”
