"Dan talks about the briefing he received on the new Lawrence Livermore El Capitan system to be built by HPE/Cray. This new $600 million system will be fueled by the AMD Genoa processor coupled with AMD’s Instinct GPUs. Performance should come in at TWO 64-bit exaflops peak, which is very, very sporty."

Today HPE announced that it will deliver the world’s fastest exascale-class supercomputer for NNSA at a record-breaking speed of 2 exaflops - 10X faster than today’s most powerful supercomputer. 'El Capitan is expected to be delivered in early 2023 and will be managed and hosted by LLNL for use by the three NNSA national laboratories: LLNL, Sandia, and Los Alamos. The system will enable advanced simulation and modeling to support the U.S. nuclear stockpile and ensure its reliability and security."

Today Cray unveiled its Cray ClusterStor E1000 system, an entirely new parallel storage platform for the Exascale Era. "As the external high performance storage system for the first three U.S. exascale systems, Cray ClusterStor E1000 will total over 1.3 exabytes of storage for all three systems combined. ClusterStor E1000 systems can deliver up to 1.6 terabytes per second and up to 50 million I/O operations per second per rack – more than double compared to other parallel storage systems in the market today."

Today the Department of Energy announced that Cray will build the NNSA’s first exascale supercomputer, “El Capitan.” To be hosted at LLNL, El Capitan will have a peak performance of more than 1.5 exaflops and an anticipated delivery in late 2022. El Capitan will be DOE’s third exascale-class supercomputer, following Argonne National Laboratory’s “Aurora” and Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s “Frontier” system. All three DOE exascale supercomputers will be built by Cray utilizing their Shasta architecture, Slingshot interconnect and new software platform.
