El Capitan Supercomputer Installation at Livermore Has Begun
With pictures to prove it, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory announced today it has begun receiving and installing components for El Capitan, what is expected to be the third exascale-class supercomputer in the U.S. The laboratory shared photos on social media today. Projected to exceed 2 exaflops, El Capitan will likely be the most powerful supercomputer […]
NNSA Completes LLNL Exascale Facility for El Capitan
WASHINGTON – The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) today announced the completion of construction on the Exascale Computing Facility Modernization project at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California. The project upgraded the electrical and mechanical capabilities of the Livermore Computing Center, which will enable the facility to power the first […]
Another Intel 7nm Chip Delay – What Does it Mean for Aurora Exascale?
The saga of Intel’s inabilities to deliver a 7nm process chip and a supercomputer called Aurora to Argonne National Laboratory opened new chapters yesterday with Intel CEO Bob Swan’s statements that the company’s 7nm “Ponte Vecchio” GPU, integral to its Aurora exascale system scheduled for delivery next year, will be delayed at least six months. […]
Video: What Does it Take to Reach 2 Exaflops?
In this video, Addison Snell from Intersect360 Research moderates a panel discussion on the El Capitan supercomputer. With a peak performance of over 2 Exaflops, El Capitan will be roughly 10x faster than today’s fastest supercomputer and more powerful than the current Top 200 systems — combined! “Watch this webcast to learn from our panel of experts about the National Nuclear Security Administration’s requirements and how the Exascale Computing Project helped drive the hardware, software, and collaboration needed to achieve this milestone.”
Podcast: A Look inside the El Capitan Supercomputer coming to LLNL
In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team looks at some of the more interesting configuration aspects of the pending El Capitan exascale supercomputer coming to LLNL in 2023. “Dan talks about the briefing he received on the new Lawrence Livermore El Capitan system to be built by HPE/Cray. This new $600 million system will be fueled by the AMD Genoa processor coupled with AMD’s Instinct GPUs. Performance should come in at TWO 64-bit exaflops peak, which is very, very sporty.”
AMD to Power 2 Exaflop El Capitan Supercomputer from HPE
Today HPE announced that it will deliver the world’s fastest exascale-class supercomputer for NNSA at a record-breaking speed of 2 exaflops – 10X faster than today’s most powerful supercomputer. ‘El Capitan is expected to be delivered in early 2023 and will be managed and hosted by LLNL for use by the three NNSA national laboratories: LLNL, Sandia, and Los Alamos. The system will enable advanced simulation and modeling to support the U.S. nuclear stockpile and ensure its reliability and security.”
New Cray ClusterStor E1000 to Power Exascale Workloads
Today Cray unveiled its Cray ClusterStor E1000 system, an entirely new parallel storage platform for the Exascale Era. “As the external high performance storage system for the first three U.S. exascale systems, Cray ClusterStor E1000 will total over 1.3 exabytes of storage for all three systems combined. ClusterStor E1000 systems can deliver up to 1.6 terabytes per second and up to 50 million I/O operations per second per rack – more than double compared to other parallel storage systems in the market today.”
Cray to Build El Capitan Exascale Supercomputer at LLNL
Today the Department of Energy announced that Cray will build the NNSA’s first exascale supercomputer, “El Capitan.” To be hosted at LLNL, El Capitan will have a peak performance of more than 1.5 exaflops and an anticipated delivery in late 2022. El Capitan will be DOE’s third exascale-class supercomputer, following Argonne National Laboratory’s “Aurora” and Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s “Frontier” system. All three DOE exascale supercomputers will be built by Cray utilizing their Shasta architecture, Slingshot interconnect and new software platform.
