The 2nd High Performance Machine Learning Workshop (HPML2019) will be collocated with CCGrid (19th IEEE/ACM International Symposium in Cluster, Cloud, and Grid Computing).

This workshop is intended to bring together the Machine Learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and High Performance Computing (HPC) communities. In recent years, much progress has been made in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in general. This progress required heavy use of high performance computers and accelerators. Moreover, ML and AI have become a "killer application" for HPC and, consequently, driven much research in this area as well. These facts point to an important cross-fertilization that this workshop intends to nourish. Learn more.

The mission of the US Department of Energy (DOE) Exascale Computing Project (ECP) was initiated in 2016 as a formal DOE project and extends through 2022. The ECP is designing the software infrastructure to enable the next generation of supercomputers—systems capable of more than 1018 operations per second—to effectively and efficiently run applications that address currently intractable problems of strategic importance. The ECP is creating and deploying an expanded and vertically integrated software stack on US Department of Energy (DOE) HPC exascale and pre-exascale systems, thereby defining the enduring US exascale ecosystem.

The project is a joint effort of two DOE programs: the Office of Science Advanced Scientific Computing Research Program and the National Nuclear Security Administration Advanced Simulation and Computing Program. ECP's RD&D activities, which encompass the development of applications, software technologies, and hardware technologies and architectures, is carried out by over 100 small teams of scientists and engineers from the DOE national laboratories, universities, and industry. Automatic Mixed Precision is an approach to simplify ease of use and provide up to 3x performance improvements by utilizing NVIDIA Tensor Cores. We’ll review the theory behind mixed-precision, the functionality of the Automatic Mixed Precision feature, how to use it in model training scripts, and some customer examples of realized performance. Compared to single precision, mixed precision offers many benefits: 2x better use of the available DRAM bandwidth, smaller memory footprints which allow larger batch sizes or network architectures with more parameters to fit in GPU memory, and allow usage of Volta's Tensor Cores to boost raw math throughput by up to 8x. We describe ways to enable Automatic Mixed Precision in TensorFlow. Learn more.
